Valley High School placed second in the Des Moines Register’s All-Sports standings for 2018-19, the newspaper announced Thursday, Aug. 8.
The Tigers tallied a total score of 67 points. Waukee earned first place for the second straight year, recording 104.5 points. Rounding out the top five in the standings were Dowling Catholic (63.5; third), Cedar Falls (55; fourth), and Southeast Polk (45; fifth).

Here’s how scores are recorded by the Register:
- Teams that win a state title earn 10 points for their school. Runners-up receive eight. Third place is worth six points, and fourth place gets five points. Fifth place collects four points, sixth place gets three points, seventh place with two points, and eighth place gets one point.
- In state tournaments, the Register says, semifinals earn 5.5 points and quarterfinals earn 2.5. Some tournaments, such as boys’ basketball, play a third-place game.
Valley has previously won this award seven times: 2002-03; 2003-04; 2004-05; 2005-06; 2006-07; 2009-10; and 2016-17.
