Varsity Wrestling · Four Valley Wrestlers Advance to 3A Quarterfinals

Valley High School competed at the Class 3A Iowa high school traditional state wrestling meet on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Wells Fargo Arena in downtown Des Moines.

Here’s how each of the six Tiger wrestlers who qualified for the traditional state tournament fared Thursday:

Caleb Corbin, 152 Pounds

Corbin defeated Divion Ocheltree of Cedar Rapids Kennedy, pinning his opponent at 5:09 in the third period. Corbin will take on Southeast Polk’s Camden Baarda in the quarterfinals Friday.

Ryan Myers, 170 Pounds

Myers lost to Des Moines Lincoln’s Mickey Griffith by a 5-2 decision. He later dropped an 8-6 decision in the consolation bracket to Tim Nimely of Muscatine.

Blake Underwood, 182 Pounds

Underwood beat Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Jay Oostendorp by a 7-1 decision. He advances to Friday’s quarterfinals and will take on Justin Brindley of Southeast Polk

Jack McCabe, 195 Pounds

McCabe lost to Bettendorf’s Kane Schmidt by a 14-11 decision in his opening match. He later defeated Norwalk’s Jason Kritzler by a 3-2 decision in the consolation bracket. He will wrestle the loser of Friday’s 3A quarterfinal match between Jake Walker of Waverly-Shell Rock and Davenport West’s Tyreese Johnson.

C.J. Stillman, 220 Pounds

Stillman won by a 6-0 decision over Fort Madison’s Diego Lozano. He will take on Iowa City High’s Jason Lemus in the quarterfinals Friday.

Bryan Jurado, 285 Pounds

Jurado won his opening match with a 3-0 decision over Justin Otto of LeMars. He will take on Bettendorf’s Griffin Liddle in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Friday’s action will begin at 9 a.m.

The Iowa High School Sports Network has partnered with TrackWrestling to stream every match of the tournament through a pay-per-view program, the IHSAA says. The semifinals will be shown on the IHSSN’s cable television network, and the finals will be shown on the IHSSN’s broadcast television network.

A free livestream will also be available for the semifinals and finals, the IHSSA says.

Valley Takes 7th at State Duals

On Wednesday, the Tigers placed 7th at the state dual meet.
