Valley-SE Polk Girls Basketball

The Class 5A 10th-ranked Valley High School varsity girls’ basketball team will kick off regional play Saturday, Feb. 22, as the Tigers host No. 14 Iowa City West at Coldiron Fieldhouse.

The opening tip is set for 5 p.m.

During the regular season, Valley (14-7), toppled Iowa City West (13-9) on Jan. 25, winning the game 65-32. It was the first victory of the Tigers’ current seven-game winning streak.

Senior Alex Honnold is the team’s top scorer, averaging 12.7 points per game. She’s sinking nearly 52 percent of her shots from the floor and almost 79 percent from the charity stripe. Honnold also leads the Tigers in rebounds (6.3/game) and total steals (52).

Senior Grace Plummer and sophomore Meredith Rieker are averaging 11.9 and 10.6 points, respectively. Junior Hayley Chappell leads the team in assists, recording 59 thus far.

As a team, Valley is averaging about 56 points per game, is making almost 40 percent of its shots from the field, and about 31 percent of its shots from 3-point territory.

The winner of Saturday’s game will face the winner of Linn-Mar vs. No. 7 Southeast Polk on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m.
