Valley Cross Country Teams Qualify for State Meet

The Valley High School varsity boys’ cross country team and the Valley varsity girls’ cross country team participated in a Class 4A state qualifying meet on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Marshalltown Community College.

Other competing teams included Ankeny, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Cedar Rapids Washington, Marshalltown, Waterloo United, and Waukee.

Both the Tiger girls’ and boys’ programs qualified for the Class 4A state boys’ and girls’ cross country meet, which will take place on Friday, Oct. 30, at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge.

Here’s how the two Valley teams performed Wednesday:

Valley Girls Take First Place

Valley finished first overall as a team, tallying 25 team points with seven of its runners placing within the top 20. Senior Lauren Schulze, who was crowned conference champ last week, headlined the pack with a runner-up performance at a mark of 18:24.0. Freshman Addison Dorenkamp was right behind Schulze in third, finishing the race at 19:00.4, and junior Kamryn Ensley in fourth with a time of 19:06.0.

Juniors Madeline Hollander and Emily Bright came in sixth (19:28.9) and 10th (19:49.6), respectively. Sophomore Amanda Overton captured 14th (20:00.8), and senior Teghan Booth took 17th (20:12.5).

Valley Boys Capture Third Place

Valley qualified for next week’s state meet as a team with a third-place overall finish and 112 points. Led by Alex Traynor, the senior came in 14th with a time of 16:44.1. Freshman Evan McClinton came in 21st at 17:03.7, and senior Adam Hisel in 22nd at 17:06.7.

Senior Alex DePhillips placed 25th (17:15.2), junior Carter Smith in 30th (17:26.8), senior Andrew Ross in 33rd (17:42.5), and freshman Alexander Wauson in 34th (17:44.0).

4A State Meet Info

The Class 4A state boys’ and girls’ cross country meet will take place on Friday, Oct. 30, at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge. The girls’ race will begin at 10:30 a.m. that day, and the boys’ race will follow at 11 a.m.

Parking will be available inside Kennedy Park. Spectator tailgating will not be permitted. Admission for spectators will be $10 each upon arrival to Kennedy Park as the shuttle bus system utilized in 2019 will not be used at the 2020 event.
