ORIGINAL POST (DEC 11): The Central Iowa Metropolitan League, based upon guidance received from Governor’s Office of the State of Iowa, the Iowa Department of Education, the Iowa Department of Public Health, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, and the Iowa High School Athletic Association, released its procedures for spectator admission to the CIML member school winter sports seasons.

Sports played in the winter include:

  • Boys’ Basketball
  • Girls’ Basketball
  • Boys’ Bowling
  • Girls’ Bowling
  • Boys’ Swimming & Diving
  • Wrestling

These procedures were developed by the 18 member schools, which includes Valley High School, to help ensure that participants, staff, and spectators can safely enjoy sports in a manner that promotes social distancing. As a reminder:

  • Students who are in either the online or in-person learning environments are eligible to participate in extracurricular activities.
  • Students and coaches/staff must wear a face mask at all times when not in competition. This includes before and after games, in locker rooms, etc. Spectators must also wear a face mask at all times.
  • WDMCS will continue to follow proper mitigation strategies during practices and games, such as limiting the number of students practicing together at one time, drill rotations, providing additional equipment for use, and daily cleaning cycles.

Here is what you should know as it relates to winter sports at WDMCS:

Face Masks

Students, staff, and spectators must wear a face mask at all times. This is in line with WDMCS’ current Return-to-Learn mitigation strategies. Guests will not be granted entry into events without a face mask.

Seating/Ticket Policies

UPDATED (JAN. 13): After reassessing spectator capacity at each of our athletic venues following Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds’ latest proclamation that lifted fan restrictions at high school sporting events, the West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) will implement the following guidelines for Valley winter sports starting Monday, Jan. 18.

In order to promote social distancing, admission to events will be limited. General public tickets will not be available for purchase. For home games, Valley will distribute laminated cards to each student in uniform at all levels:

  • Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball: Two spectators per athlete at each level
UPDATE: When varsity ONLY plays at Coldiron Fieldhouse, four spectators per athlete are allowed.
  • Boys’ and Girls’ Bowling: Two spectators per athlete at each level
  • Boys’ Swimming & Diving: No spectators allowed
  • Wrestling: Two spectators per athlete at each level
UPDATE: When varsity ONLY wrestles at Coldiron Fieldhouse, four spectators per athlete are allowed.
  • Cheer/Dance/Band: Two spectators per performer at each level

These laminated cards allow individuals to pay admission to gain entrance for the contest. It only allows an individual to purchase admission, has no cash value, and may only be used at the venue and event listed. Visiting fans will check in with Valley’s ticket seller, who will have that team’s roster. When Valley travels for games, our families will check in with that host school’s ticket seller.

Ticket gates will open at least 60 minutes prior to the start of each contest. Spectators are expected to sit in marked sections at facilities. After each game, gyms will be cleared to allow for deep cleaning of high-tough surface areas.

UPDATE: When varsity ONLY plays at Coldiron Fieldhouse, four spectators per athlete are allowed.
    • VISITOR SECTION: Two spectators per player at each level

Valley Southwoods Gymnasium: Sit in taped areas

    • HOME SECTION: Two spectators per player at each level
    • VISITOR SECTION: Two spectators per player at each level

Valley Pool: No spectators

Student Activity Tickets & Booster Club Passes

As previously mentioned, WDMCS has temporarily suspended the sale of Student Activity Tickets (SATs). All CIML schools voted that SATs will not be honored at home or away athletic events.

Students who already have an SAT or families who have purchased a pass from the Valley Tiger Booster Club AND receive a uniformed player’s admission card can use their SAT/Booster Club pass for admission into the event. This is for home events ONLY.

Families who purchased a SAT for their student can request a refund. Please contact your school in order to do so.

Concessions & Restrooms

Concessions will be open at athletics events, with sealed and pre-packaged items available for purchase.

Restrooms at each facility will also be available. Please maintain social distance from others when using the facilities.

Livestreams

Due to limited spectator attendance, WDMCS is collaborating with Central Iowa Sports Network for livestream viewing. Only HOME VARSITY events are being considered through CISN, but coaches at other levels may provide a different resource for their student-athletes and families.

Links to all home varsity livestreams will be made available on ValleyTigers.com and CISN.tv. Broadcasts for other home games will be made available on the WDMCS YouTube channel.

Thank You

We take this return to athletics and activities very seriously. The safety of our students, families, and staff will always be our first priority, and our district and school administrators, staff, and coaches have and continue to work tirelessly to ensure we have the appropriate plans in place at every facility for every team and activity.

Thank you for everything you do to support all of our athletics and activities programs. Go Tigers!
